Ufor school
An intensive one-week hands-on summer or early fall school in socio-ecological urban planning and applications of urban forestry is offered annually to all funded trainees. These field schools are great opportunities for our trainees to meet other students in their field from across Canada but also an opportunity to discuss and learn from the top national and international experts in the field of urban forestry across Canada.
2023 Field School
The 3rd Ufor field school took place in Toronto and Montreal in early August 2023. There were 25 students who participated this field school as well as 15 professor and partners. Amongts the partners participating this year there were people from Tree Canada, The city of Toronto, the city of Montreal and Parc Jean-Drapeau. In Toronto field sites visited included different city parks (Sutterland park, Beare Hill Park, Don Valley Brickworks and High Park) as well as tree nursery (Unwin Nursery). In Montreal we visited sites impacted by recent disturbances (emerald ash borer and the recent ice storm) on the Mont-Royal as well as visited different sites in the Parc Jean-Drapeau to discuss issues related with the socio-ecological benefits of urban forest and different greening projects.
2022 Field School
The second Ufor field school took place in Charlottetown before The Canadian Urban Forest Conference in early october 2022. Despite the major damages left behind by Huricane Fiona in Charlottetown and all PEI just a week before our field school we were fortunate to be able have our field school and attend The Canadian Urban Forest Conference. We had a total 28 students and 6 professors and partners participating in the field school which allowed for many interesting discussion and the opportunity to withness first hands the consequence of huricannes on urban forests and demonstrate some of the issues that are important when planting urban trees. Here are a few pictures from the 2022 field school in Charlottetown PEI.
First summer school in 2021
In late August 2021, we had our first Ufor field school in a hybrid format (in person and online). Ufor trainees groups met in person in 3 different cities across Canada (Toronto, Montreal and Halifax) and completed half days in field courses that addressed a daily theme. These field courses were held at 1 or 2 sites across their respective cities and included meetings with different practitioners. In the afternoon, all the groups met online to attend a seminar, share field observations from each cities and discussed the daily theme. Here are a few pictures from the 2021 summer school. To view some of the online conferences and student presentations during the 2021 field school visit the Ufor seminar page.
